The Importance of Clean Code
Because a search engine spider reads a site like a web browser
does, it can easily get tripped up if there are problems with
the HTML code. Broken tags, improper coding and excessive
java script can cause a spider to run into problems indexing
the page. Often times when this happens, a spider will simply
leave.
A few things worth considering when you build your web site:
Hand Code Your HTML: Because WSYWIG editors like Front Page
and Dreamweaver tend to add proprietary code to a web page,
the most effective way to create clutter free code is to write
the code by hand.
Use a Validator to Check Your Code: Since time constraints
and limited understanding of HTML often limit a webmaster's
ability to hand code their pages, it's a good idea to use
a code validator to make sure there are no broken or incorrect
tags on your page. There are several excellent free validators
available online, including one from the W3C. (http://validator.w3.org/)
